After the end of the Second World War, many BR 44 locomotives remained in various European countries. The SNCF received the largest stock, which mainly consisted of locomotives that had been commissioned by the DRB in French locomotive factories. A total of 226 locomotives of the ÜK design were classified under the French class designation 150 X and the originally intended serial numbers. Later the number was renumbered 150 X 1 to 150 X 226. A further 13 locomotives came to France as spoils of war. Most of the locomotives were in service in the eastern region of France, 50 machines were stationed in the northern region.
