Beschreibung
Farmbuildings Waldniel - coach barn. The main farmbuilding was build in Waldniel (Schwalmtal). Parts of the facades of the building , which was constructed as a timbered frame house, were updated in 1785 using bricks. The barns were constructed in 1791 (large) and 1802 (small) and originate from other lower rhine area farms. The coach barn is a reconstruction and depicts the situation around 1800.

The farmhouse from Waldniel

This byre-dwelling is from Waldniel, which belongs to the community Schwalmtal. Originally, this house was a pure timber-frame house, but in the year 1785 big parts of the front of the building were replaced by historic bricks. Both the small barn from 1802, and the big barn, which was built in the year 1791, stem from different farms from the Lower-Rhine region. The carriage house is a reconstruction of a building from around 1800.

The farm is very typical for the 19th century. The advancing industrialization also brought changes to the farms. Many peasants and day laborers had to get additional jobs in factories, because the money they earned on the farms was not enough to live on anymore. The economic freedom led to an enormous competition and thereby a big price pressure arose which many people could not bear up against. Furthermore, the women had to replace the workforce, which was lost because men went to the factories in the cities. Wealthy owners modernized and expanded their farms. But the housing conditions changed too: Health awareness increased and the knowledge of modern medicine expanded, which led to a higher demand of hygiene and sanitation. Running water, lavatories and bathrooms were used more and more.

Did you know that…
… the German expression for “filthy rich” would literally translated mean “stone rich”? This expression comes from building a house. In the past, people who did not have much money lived in houses with walls of wood, clay and hay. But in fall and winter these walls could not protect them very well from the cold, rain and snow. They had to be repaired very often because the rain had washed off the clay. The people who had more money could build houses of stone – the warmth of the oven stayed better inside and when the weather was bad the people where better protected because of the increased solidity of the wall. And everyone could see that one was “stone rich”.
