Deutsche Bahn designates the new generation of high-speed Intercity-Express (ICE) trains for long-distance passenger transport as ICE 4 or BR 412. Siemens Mobility / Bombardier was commissioned in 2011 to develop and build 170 trains, initially with twelve-part variants from December 2017, later seven-car trains will be ready for use from December 2020. A total of up to 300 new ICEs are to be purchased. The trains are designed as multiple units for passenger transport. They are powered by several independently powered cars, so-called powercars, which are distributed over the train. Non-powered intermediate cars, dining cars and service cars. The trains can also be used coupled in double traction. The exterior design of the trains was awarded the Red Dot Design Award in 2015. The first series of 130 multiple units comprises 45 seven-car and 85 twelve-car.
With 412 034 (multiple unit 9034) the new design of the ICE fleet was presented in September 2019. The fastest climate protectors in Germany will in future wear a green / red stripe on the two end cars.
