Description
The VT18.16 are high-quality multiple units and were intended especially for international use. They were built from 1963 by VEB Waggonbau Görlitz. The vehicles were used in international traffic to Scandinavia, Austria and Czechoslovakia. The train route was known as Vindobona via Prague to Vienna. Due to the length of the railway ferries, the trains to and from Scandinavia only ran with two middle carriages. The SVTs of this series last ran to Vienna as Vindobona in 1979 - this was due to compensation payments from the ÖBB, as they no longer had suitable multiple units for the regular use on this connection. The last international operations were in the early 1980s as Karlex and Karola to Karlsbad.
