Description
In 1934, the Deutsche Reichsbahn ordered four C-coupled locomotives from AEG and three from BBC/Kraus Maffei. The AEG locomotives differed visually from the BBC machines in their square and flatter front ends; they were somewhat slower but had more power at 725 kW. After delivery, the locomotives were stationed in Munich and Stuttgart. At the DB, the locomotives ran in Augsburg, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Munich, and Stuttgart. In 1960/61, the locomotives were extensively modernized and received shunting platforms and additional windows as well as the DB red paint job. From 1976 to 1979, the locomotives, renamed BR 163 from 1968, were retired. The last locomotive to be retired was number 163 002. The E63 01 and E63 02 are still preserved as museum locomotives.
