For the SBB's Bahn 2000 project, BBC and SLM manufactured four prototypes of a four-axle electric locomotive constructed from lightweight steel. These locomotives, designated Re 4/4 IV by SBB, were intensively tested by SBB from 1982 onwards. With the 160 km/h locomotives, not only was the new rectifier technology tested but also new color schemes – thus, all four locomotives received different liveries. It wasn't until 1986 that the Re 4/4 IVs received a uniform color scheme in traffic red with the Bahn 2000 advertising. From 1994 onwards, the Südostbahn (SOB) took over the locomotives, previously known as Re 446, and converted them into rolling advertising billboards. With the introduction of the Stadler Flirt at SOB in 2019, all Re 4/4 IVs were sold to EDG.
