In April 1973, representatives of various transport companies met to jointly commission a modern light rail vehicle. In January 1974, the first 30 vehicles were ordered.
By the mid-nineties more than 12 city railcars had been built as 6-axle or 8-axle vehicles for more than 12 different public transport companies. Many public transport companies still use the Stadtbahn type M tram.
