Beschreibung
The SECR N-class was a type 2-6-0 ("Mogul") steam locomotive designed by Richard Maunsell in 1914 for mixed traffic on the South Eastern and Chatham Railway (SECR). It was built between 1917 and 1934 and was the first locomotive that did not come from the Great Western Railway (GWR) and took up and improved the basic design principles of GWR chief engineer George Jackson Churchward. The N-Class was based on the construction of the GWR-Class 4300, which was improved with concepts from the Midland Railway.

The class N was mechanically similar to the 2-6-4 passenger tank locomotive of the SECR class K, which was also designed by Maunsell. It influenced the future development of 2-6-0 locomotives in Great Britain and formed the basis for the 3-cylinder class N1 locomotive of 1922. Production was delayed by the outbreak of World War I, and the first N-class left the Ashford Works in 1917, three years after construction was completed. The series replaced obsolete 0-6-0 locomotives as part of the standardization of the SECR fleet, as it used parts interchangeable with those of other classes.

Eighty class N locomotives were built in three lots between World War I and World War II. Fifty of them were assembled from kits of parts made at the Royal Arsenal in Woolwich, earning them the nickname "Woolworths". They ran on most of the Southern Railway (SR) network and were used by the British Railways (BR) Southern Region until the last one was retired in 1966. A class N locomotive has been preserved on the Swanage Railway.
