Cogwheel railways radiate a very special fascination with their unique combination of mountains and bold routes, with numerous bridges and tunnels. The movement of the train is caused by the engagement of a toothed wheel in a rack in the middle of the track, as the usual friction between wheel and rail is no longer sufficient for the steep gradients. In rack railways of the so-called mixed system, in which friction sections alternate with rack sections, depending on the gradient, the tensile force is exerted by one and the same machine. In the Alps you will find a particularly large number of private cog railways, which are very popular with tourists from all over the world.
