The red railbuses appeared on the scene in the 1950s as the "saviors of branch lines." The prototype for the Fleischmann model is the single-engine railbus VT 95 with the trailer VB 142, which is shorter than the motor car. A VT 95 with trailer VB 142 is still in service today as a museum vehicle with Deutsche Bahn (DB). Because the trailer car in the prototype was not equipped as a so-called control car with a driver's cab, the railbus, when operating in two-car formation, did not run as a permanently coupled push-pull train, but always with the motor car leading. The motor car therefore had to be turned around at the destination station.
