In the 1960s, the E 03 series was built, the most powerful electric locomotive to date for use in passenger train services on the German Federal Railway. Between 1970 and 1974, a total of 145 series locomotives were built and officially designated as the 103.1 series. Visually, the 103s are still considered to be one of the most beautifully designed electric locomotives.
