In the 1960s, the class E 03 was the most powerful electric locomotive for use in passenger trains on the Deutsche Bundesbahn. A total of 145 series locomotives were built from 1970 to 1974 and officially designated as the 103.1 series. Visually, the 103s are still considered one of the most attractive electric locomotives. From 1987, with the new DB color concept, most locomotives were painted in oriental red with a white bib below the windscreen.
