Cog railways radiate a very special fascination with their unique combination of mountains and bold routing, with numerous bridges and tunnels. The train is moved by engaging a cog wheel in a rack located in the middle of the track, since the usual friction between wheel and rail is no longer sufficient for the steep gradients. In cogwheel railways of the so-called mixed system, in which friction sections alternate with rack and pinion sections, depending on the gradient, the traction is exerted by one and the same machine. In the Alps you will find a particularly large number of private rack railways, which are very popular with tourists from all over the world.
