The decline in traffic at the Deutsche Reichsbahn led to the decommissioning of many locomotives. The class 118, which had been indispensable until recently, was the most affected. The increasing electrification at the DR had also led to a decline in the use of the 118 in previous years. However, some locomotives from the former V 180, which had been renamed class 228 on January 1, 1992, were to be used on the steep stretches in Thuringia in the long term. A few locomotives from the class 228.6-8 were retained by the DB AG until 1998.
