The 1044 series is an electric universal locomotive that is suitable for both heavy-duty express and freight train service in the lowlands as well as on mountain routes. At the time of commissioning, it was the most powerful four-axle electric locomotive in the world and the showpiece of the Austrian Federal Railways until the Taurus was acquired. The copies 1044 071-095 and 097 had high, continuous roof ventilators as an external distinguishing feature.
