The standard color scheme for DB long-distance locomotives is traffic red with a light gray front bar. For the anniversary "50 years of Intercity in Germany", in September 2021, the Deutsche Bahn donated the 101 013 the color scheme to match the painting of the IC cars. It was given the light gray design familiar from the ICE and long-distance coaches with a traffic red decorative stripe. A total of 145 examples of the 101 series were put into service by the end of 1999.
