Based on the French BB 7200 electric locomotive, the NS received the four-axle electric locomotives of the 1600 series. When they were introduced in 1981, they were the most powerful locomotives in the NS fleet. With a service weight of 83 t, they delivered 4,540 kW and reached a top speed of 140 km/h.
