For use on the French direct current network, the French State Railways (SNCF) acquired a total of 237 locomotives of the multi-purpose locomotive BB 7200 from 1976 onwards. The design of the locomotives with the so-called "nez cassé" (broken nose) comes from the hand of the French Paul Arzens, who was responsible for the design of several SNCF locomotives at the time. Starting in 1999, the locomotives were divided into the various business areas and have since been used in a wide variety of train types.
