From 1971, the German Federal Railroad put 398 series 218 locomotives into service and used them in front of both passenger and freight trains. They are used on most non-electrified routes and can reach a top speed of 140 km/h with an output of 1,840 kW. The 218 series has gone through a number of color variants over the years. The first 218s were still delivered in the crimson color scheme usual for diesel locomotives. From 1975 the colors ocean blue/beige determined the appearance of the locomotives. As a one-off, 218 217 was given a trial coat of TEE paint, which it retained until 2002.
