The introduction of the new Austro cycle in June 1991 caused the ÖBB to have a shortage of diesel locomotives with electric train heating. In order to free up the series 2043 and 2143 for passenger train service, 34 locomotives of the DB class 211 were procured. The locomotives, which were repowered with a Caterpilar motor, were used for the train promotions Wels, Vienna North, Amstetten and Krems in shunting and freight train service.
