2-car Spanish regional train TRD 594
For digital operation, the motor car and control car must each be equipped with a Next18 decoder.
The Renfe or TRD (Tren Regional Diesel) Class 594 is a series of diesel trains specifically designed for regional services. This series entered service in the late 1990s and improved regional transport on non-electrified lines with a top speed of 160 km/h and significantly more modern equipment than the older Classes 592 and 593, as well as their successors, the older Class 597, which had been retired since 1995 and was very similar in terms of the number of carriages and seats.
The 594 series is based on the Danish IC3 train, developed by ABB Scandia, a company later acquired by Adtranz. IC3 trains operate in Denmark (since 1990), Israel, and Sweden. The main difference is that the originals are built as motor-trailer-motor (MRM) units and are articulated (they share the bogie at the carriage crossing).
The Spanish version was manufactured in Spain under license from CAF. Its main feature is its pneumatic front, which allows for easy coupling of the trains. The cabin is foldable, enabling complete communication between coupled trains as if they were a single unit. Unlike earlier regional trains, the seats are fixed, with half facing each direction.
