Beschreibung
Pannier tanks were used almost exclusively by GWR in Great Britain. They were built to replace earlier and old designs of saddle tank locomotives. Their design has the advantages of a low center of gravity, greater reach and easy access for maintenance. A total of 863 locomotives were built between 1929 and 1950, 16 of which are still preserved. 11 Pannier locomotives were bought by London Transport and used to shunt the underground system. These locomotives had the numbers L89 to L99 and were used until 1971. The locomotives were so durable that the last locomotive was used by the National Coal Board in the Deep Duffryn Colliery in Mountain Ash well into the 1970s.
