The Panzerkampfwagen III (also PzKpfw III or Panzer III) was a medium German tank in World War II. Intended as the standard model for future Panzer divisions, it was equipped with an armour-piercing cannon for anti-tank warfare, while the similar Panzer IV was intended to serve as a support vehicle. Developed by Daimler-Benz, the Panzer III was the most important German armoured combat vehicle in 1941 and 1942. It performed well in the first half of the war, but with the appearance of more powerful enemy tanks, its combat value quickly declined due to its limited upgradeability. 5,700 examples were produced between 1936 and 1943, with the chassis being produced until the end of the war as the basis for the far more successful Sturmgeschütz III.
