With the advent of the Einheitswagen IV, the EW I and II partly migrated to regional transport. In addition, they continue to run in Interregios and in express trains, in the latter especially as reinforcement cars in rush hours. In an upcoming asbestos removal most of the cars were completely modernized inside. Instead of imitation wood, the walls were covered with plastic panels that carry a tile imitation. The front walls are solid red or blue inside, the seats now have gray upholstery with gray, blue or red headrests. Instead of the axle generator, the vehicles today have battery chargers. 144 cars were rebuilt in 1984 for the NPZ (Neue Pendelzüge) and a non-conductor operation. They were given new, flush with the car body final doors that could be closed remotely. Matching was the new yellow-blue-white exterior paint, which was christened the name "Kolibri". In addition, many of the cars used in traditional services have been modernized - but with them doors and operation remained unchanged. These cars received a green-blue color, which was called "parrot painting" analogous to the NPZ car. One-of-a-kind commuter trains from EW II can still be seen daily between Basel and Lucerne.
