In 1976, the DR took over 103 newbuild vehicles, which could not decrease the CSD due to financing difficulties. The DR planned with these cars completely new traffic as a daily connection between the district capitals and Berlin without intermediate stops. For this, the cars received an attractive finish in ivory-orange. The new train class was called "City Express". In the targeted high-class offer all trains should also lead a dining car, so far in domestic express trains rather the exception. Since the cars were only those of the 1st and 2nd class, but you had to find a suitable vehicle for this purpose. It was decided to repaint the newly delivered 18.7 m dining car from Halberstadt, even if the desired uniform train pattern could not be fully achieved due to its different shape. In total, twenty of the fifty WRge received the paint job.
