Double-decker trains have successfully formed the backbone of regional transport for many years. Double-decker trains are the ideal solution, particularly on routes with short platform lengths and high passenger volumes. The proven single-car concept of the TWINDEXX Vario double-decker fleet is now being supplemented by an electric multiple unit. Bombardier Transportation will supply 16 Bombardier TWINDEXX Vario multiple units equipped for regional trains to Deutsche Bahn AG. The new four-car multiple units of the Do 2010 generation each consist of two multiple units and two intermediate units. With the newly developed powered TWINDEXX Vario multiple unit, the trains can now also be used as pure double-decker multiple units. This enables use as an electric multiple unit in addition to classic push-pull operation with an electric or diesel locomotive. Depending on the intended use and required capacity, this multiple unit can be combined with an intermediate unit and a control car. The center buffer coupling enables double traction operation and thus the implementation of a wing concept. The trains, with combined high- and low-entry, are comfortably equipped with generous seat pitch and ample storage space. The double-decker individual carriages also allow the train to be lengthened or shortened, thus adapting to fluctuating demand or future developments. They can therefore be used for a wide variety of operational applications in regional and long-distance transport.
