The current Class 232 locomotives of Deutsche Bahn began their career in the 1970s as the Class 132 of the Deutsche Reichsbahn. They were built at the Luhansk Locomotive Works (then the Voroshilovgrad Locomotive Plant) in the Soviet Union. These locomotives were specifically designed for use on the non-electrified main lines of East Germany and were intended to haul both heavy freight trains and express trains. With an output of 3,000 hp, electric train heating, and proven Soviet technology, they were among the most powerful diesel locomotives in Europe.
For many years, these locomotives shaped the image of the railway in eastern Germany and were considered a symbol of reliability and power, qualities they retained even after 1994 under their new designation Class 232 at Deutsche Bahn.
