In the early 1930s, in order to make traveling and excursion services more attractive for the German population, the then Deutsche Reichsbahn-Gesellschaft (DRG) decided to build a total of five observation railcars. At that time, it was important for the DRG to be able to stand up to the increasing competition in bus services for excursions. When building the railcars, the goal was to give all passengers as free and unhindered a view of the landscape as possible. In addition to three diesel-hydraulic vehicles, two were also ordered for electric operation. H. Fuchs Waggonfabrik in Heidelberg was responsible for the mechanical part, while AEG, Berlin, supplied the electrical part. Both railcars ET 91 01 and 02, which were given the sonorous name "Glass Train" by the population, quickly established themselves with the passengers. Popular excursions were the Karwendel tour via Mittenwald to Innsbruck or the Alpine tour via Salzburg, Bischofshofen and Kufstein to Munich.

From 1960 to 1982, the DR purchased shunting locomotives of the V 60 series. Despite being well received by staff and the workshop, some improvements were made after the first series was delivered. The friction mass was increased to 60 t by installing a 5 ton counterweight. The most noticeable change to the exterior was the driver's cab. It now had the same width as the frame and was equipped with a sun protection roof. The improved design was delivered from 1964 as V 60.12, and after changing the numbering system at the DR it was listed as series 106.

For the realization of the "Bahn 2000" concept, the SBB procured 24 locomotives of this series. Another series of 75 locomotives was built to manage the piggyback corridor through Switzerland that was to be guaranteed from January 1, 1994. These locomotives were later assigned to passenger service with the divisionalization. To this day, they are indispensable for traction in Switzerland's dense scheduled traffic.

For the anniversary "50 years of Intercity in Germany", in September 2021, the Deutsche Bahn donated the 101 013 the color scheme to match the painting of the IC cars. It was given the light gray design familiar from the ICE and long-distance coaches with a traffic red decorative stripe. A total of 145 examples of the 101 series were put into service by the end of 1999.
