They usually hauled freight trains. The last unit in the DB's service, the 56 2637, was taken out of service in 1963 and decommissioned in 1965.

On January 24, 1905, electric operations began on the 23.7 km long track into the Ammer Valley. It was the first journey of an electric train under a simple alternating current overhead line. This made it the first route to be equipped with a new system, the "railway current" that is still in use in Central and Northern Europe today.
The route was initially operated by electric railcars, and later by small electric locomotives that could reach speeds of up to 50 kilometers per hour. The energy in the form of single-phase alternating current came from the Kammerl hydroelectric power station on the Ammer. From 1930, the beefy LAG 5 - later 169 005 - reinforced the electric locomotive fleet on the Oberammergau railway. Despite its length of only 8.7 meters, the small powerhouse proved to be excellent.
For decades, the railway, with its coziness and idyllic surroundings of a Bavarian local railway, held a special appeal for all railway enthusiasts. The era of the "Neinasechzga" in local transport on the Oberammergau Railway came to an end in May 1981. With the withdrawal of the old locomotives, regular service began, and the charm of an incomparable era was irretrievably gone.
