Deutsche Bahn calls the new generation of Intercity-Express (ICE) high-speed trains for long-distance passenger transport the ICE 4 or BR 412. In 2011, Siemens Mobility/Bombardier was commissioned with the development and construction of initially 170 trains. Initially, twelve-car variants should be ready for use from December 2017, and later seven-car trains from December 2020. A total of up to 300 new ICE trains are to be purchased. The trains are intended as multiple units for passenger transport. They are powered by several self-propelled cars, so-called powercars, which are distributed throughout the train. The new ICE trains are made up of five types of cars: end cars, powered middle cars ("Powercar"), non-powered middle cars, dining cars and service cars. The trains can also be used coupled in double traction. The exterior design of the trains won the Red Dot Design Award in 2015. The first series of 130 multiple units includes 45 seven-car and 85 twelve-car trains.
The new design of the ICE fleet was presented in September 2019 with 412 034 (multiple unit 9034). The fastest climate protectors in Germany will in future have a green/red stripe on the two end cars.
