Dresden, the state capital of the Free State of Saxony in eastern Germany, operates tram services on a route network of currently around 135 kilometers. Tatra tram type T4D-B4D:
The Tatra trams, built by the Czech manufacturer CKD in Prague since the 1960s, are based on a license from the American PCC cars from the 1930s. However, the T3 series model was too wide for the networks in the former GDR. This resulted in a narrower version as “T4” and the addition “D” for Dresden. Originally only Tatra railcars with drives and pantographs were produced in Prague. Because of the poor power supply at the time, the required three-car units could not be formed. Until 1971, a sidecar without a drive was designed especially for the GDR, which was coupled with one or two railcars under the name “B4”. By 1984, Dresden had received a total of 572 Tatra “T4D” railcars and 250 “B4D” sidecars. Another 1986 cars went to Leipzig, Halle and Magdeburg. After the fall of the Wall, part of the Dresden Tatra fleet was modernized and painted in the Dresden city colors of yellow and black. With the arrival of modern low-floor railways in Dresden, the Tatras were gradually phased out from the mid-1990s. Some were sold to North Korea, Romania and former Soviet states, and worn-out vehicles were scrapped. Redesigned several times, the yellow Dresden Tatra cars were still in service sporadically until spring 2023. On May 31st, the last three Tatras made their way from passenger service to the tram museum. The present model in the original red color was delivered to Dresden in 1967 and has been in the Dresden Tram Museum's inventory since 2002 in the combination of railcar No. 1998 and sidecar No. 105-7, fully operational.
Tatra tram type T4-B4 Model information: The past of the Tatra tram goes back to the GDR era. The previous versions were designed by the Czechoslovakian manufacturer CKD Tatra in what was then the GDR, tested in Prague and then used in the major cities of Dresden, Leipzig, Halle and Magdeburg. After reunification, these trams were even used abroad such as North Korea, Romania and Russia. A total of 2,635 T4 vehicles were built between 1968 and 1987. The majority of production took place in Dresden and Leipzig.
The Dresden transport company used the Tatra tram for a very long time. In recent years, trams have been used primarily for school transport. There were still many reinforcement deployments during cancellations, concerts, special trips or on general routes, most recently in 2018 as line 8. The Tatra tram was also impressive as a “Rock the Train” party train. The use of the trams was possible until May 2023 due to a complete refurbishment between 2016-2018. The last remaining model has belonged to the Dresen Tram Museum since the end of May.
