The two-cylinder engines of the 01 series are considered to be the first express train locomotives to be built according to the standard construction program. The first batches were equipped with leading wheels with a diameter of 800 mm and were approved for 120 km/h. From 01 102, 1,000 mm front wheels and reinforced brakes were used, which allowed the maximum speed to be increased to 130 km/h.
The heyday of the 01 series began with the summer timetable of 1934. The services that were driven in those years were a challenge for the machines and the personnel. After the Second World War, these were only achieved again by electric locomotives and large diesel locomotives.
Henschel delivered the 01 102 locomotive to the Frankfurt (M) depot in 1934, which used it to serve the Rhine Valley routes, the route to Leipzig and the route over the Spessart to Treuchtlingen.
