The class 86 was a standard tank locomotive that was built in large numbers by numerous German locomotive factories for the Deutsche Reichsbahn. Some of these steam locomotives found their way to Austria after the end of the war and were used for passenger and freight transport. One of the most spectacular jobs was the pre-tensioning work for heavy ore trains in front of the 52 series. The machines were at home at the Hieflau, Selzthal, Linz, Bischofshofen and St. Veit/Glan boiler houses, among others. The last locomotives were parked in 1972.

In 1972, the Deutsche Reichsbahn in the former GDR initially fitted three units of the 110 series with a 1,200 hp diesel engine as an experiment, which also proved to be excellent in express train service. Like other components, the fluid transmission was adapted accordingly. Between 1981 and 1990 there were further conversions (about 500 locomotives) to 1,200 hp (883 kW) at Raw Stendal using the 12 KVD 18/21 AL-4 and AL-5 engines. These locomotives were designated as the 112 series.

After the end of the war, 44 locomotives of the DRG class E 94 were in Austria. In 1952, ÖBB ordered three more locomotives. The series designation was changed from E 94 to 1020 series in 1954. The 1020 series was used in freight train and ramp service in almost all of Austria for more than five decades.
The color appearance of the 1020 series changed over time from fir green to blood orange to traffic red. Not all machines were affected. After the last of the three pine green replica machines left the operating status in 1985, there were no longer any green 1020s in operation. It was not until 1990 that road number 1020 042 was painted in fir green and from then on it was also available for nostalgic purposes (including as the haul locomotive for the Nostalgia Orient Express).
About a year later, 1020 047 was also painted fir green. In addition, two green decorative lines were applied to the locomotive body and one decorative line to each of the stems. In contrast to 1020 042, road number 1020 027 was still covered with ÖBB logos, which were later removed.
