In the second half of the 1950s, the FS developed the design of a new "standard" diesel engine with the aim of replacing steam traction and the older, already war-tested propeller even in normal local transport. , unobtrusive services but of fundamental importance for all national rail traffic. Simplicity of construction, reliability and a significant improvement in performance and comfort compared to the previous material, have given the new aln 668 (autonomous fueled with 68 places suitable for multiple commands) a great success, until it was built in 785 units divided into 12 series over almost 3 decades for FS alone, plus about 90 pieces for private railways, associated trailers and hundreds of examples built for foreign railways. From 1900 and onwards the 1000 series of 1975/76 the chest of drawers underwent a "redesign", increasing in size and adopting two paracentric dresses, and then, similar to the first build series, returned to the single double suite anteroom for the following ones back 1200 and series 3000 / 3100/3300 from 1979.
