In the early 1940s, the DRG procured a total of 16 two-car multiple units for suburban traffic in the port city of Szczecin. They were built by the WUMAG company in Görlitz and received the company numbers VT 137 331 to 367 and VT 137 367 to 376. In the "Stettin" type railcars, four different diesel engines with the same output and the same prescribed installation dimensions were manufactured by Daimler-Benz , Deutz, MAN and DWK tested. However, the Stettiners were no longer used before the Second World War. They were parked at various RBD Stettin stations only as a reserve for the Wehrmacht.
After the end of the war, nine remained with the DR, four with the later DB and one initially with the CSD. The DB put three vehicles back into service and redesignated them as VT45s in the late 1940s. They were retired in the late 1960s. The DR only put five of the railcars back into service (137 329, 331, 367, 368 and 371). They were first deployed at Bw Berlin, then later to Halle and Dresden-Pieschen until the mid-1960s. The last two remaining vehicles (137 331 and 371) were converted into sidecars.
The present model with the number 137 331 was based in Dresden-Altstadt.

The BR 24 was primarily intended for passenger trains, but thanks to its robust construction, its field of application was soon extended to light freight trains, making it a reliable multi-purpose locomotive for lighter services.

The steam locomotives, known as “jumbo” because of their pulling power, were used with great success in almost all of Germany and in many other European countries. The top speed was 80 km / h forwards, and 50 km / h could be driven backwards. Some of these already very powerful machines recorded a further increase in output to 2,100 hp (1,546 kW) at the Deutsche Bundesbahn when they were converted to oil firing from 1955. The DB's oil-fired locomotives had the series designation 043 from 1968.

The standard locomotive program of the Deutsche Reichsbahn-Gesellschaft (DRG) also included the development of a powerful freight locomotive. The locomotive with a triple engine, known as the BR 44, was expected to transport freight trains up to 1,200 t in the low mountain range and up to 600 t over steep ramps. In 1926 the first 10 machines with the 1'E h3 wheel arrangement were delivered. It was not until 1937, after increased demands on train transport, that this locomotive went into series production and was procured in large numbers in various designs.
At the end of 1945 there were 277 locomotives in the Soviet occupation zone, which later became the territory of the GDR. Due to the demarcation after the end of the Second World War, only limited amounts of hard coal were available. Therefore one was initially forced to use indigenous brown coal. Due to the lower calorific value compared to hard coal, the locomotives only achieved about half of their actual output. In the sweat of their brow, the stokers shoveled enormous amounts of lignite into the firebox to make up for this shortcoming.

From the mid-1950s, the Deutsche Bundesbahn procured a total of 942 class V 60/V 60.1 locomotives for light and medium shunting service. The difference between the V 60 (260) and V 60.1 (261) series lies in the higher friction load of the 261 series. The power is 478 kW. After the first decommissioning in the 1980s, many examples reached railways in Germany and abroad.

In 1941 and 1942 a total of four type D 311 double locomotives were put into service by the German Wehrmacht. They were built to transport heavy rail artillery. Two locomotives, the V 188 001 a / b and the V 188 002 a / b, continued to be used by the Deutsche Bundesbahn after the war. A third locomotive served as a spare parts donor. They proved their worth in the heavy freight train and pushing service, mainly on the Spessart ramp. After a generator damage, the V 188 001 had to be shut down as early as 1968. V 188 002, later 288 002, was still in operation in the Franconian region until 1972. In 1973 both machines were scrapped.

The 1044 series is an electric universal locomotive that is suitable for both heavy-duty express and freight train service in the lowlands as well as on mountain routes. At the time of commissioning, it was the most powerful four-axle electric locomotive in the world and the showpiece of the Austrian Federal Railways until the Taurus was acquired. The copies 1044 071-095 and 097 had high, continuous roof ventilators as an external distinguishing feature.

The vehicle sound decoder SD10A supports braking with asymmetrical digital voltage (four diodes in series and one diode anti-parallel), slow travel (with suitable braking modules) and bidirectional communication (locomotive address feedback in DCC operation, RailCom®).
