In 1961, the DB commissioned German electrical and locomotive construction companies to submit suitable designs for a six-axle locomotive with at least 5,000 kW of power - capable of a maximum speed of 200 km/h. In February 1965 the first of four pre-series machines was delivered. However, Germany's new parade horses could not be used to their full extent in plan service because of the speed regulations at the time. With the commissioning of the series machines BR 103.1 in 1970, the advance locomotives increasingly lost their planned performance, but were still available for test drives with new cars.

The trolleys are filled via filler lids on the container roof, which can be reached via catwalks. The trolleys are emptied by a compressed air system.
