In 1941 and 1942 a total of four type D 311 double locomotives were put into service by the German Wehrmacht. They were built to transport heavy rail artillery. Two locomotives, the V 188 001 a / b and the V 188 002 a / b, continued to be used by the Deutsche Bundesbahn after the war. A third locomotive served as a spare parts donor. They proved their worth in the heavy freight train and pushing service, mainly on the Spessart ramp. After a generator damage, the V 188 001 had to be shut down as early as 1968. V 188 002, later 288 002, was still in operation in the Franconian region until 1972. In 1973 both machines were scrapped.

For use on the French direct current network, the French State Railways (SNCF) acquired a total of 237 locomotives of the multi-purpose locomotive BB 7200 from 1976 onwards. The design of the locomotives with the so-called "nez cassé" (broken nose) comes from the hand of the French Paul Arzens, who was responsible for the design of several SNCF locomotives at the time. Starting in 1999, the locomotives were divided into the various business areas and have since been used in a wide variety of train types.

The design of the locomotives with the so-called “nez cassé” (broken nose) comes from the hand of the French Paul Arzens, who was responsible for the design of several SNCF locomotives at the time. Between 1976 and 1986 Alstom built a total of 205 locomotives in six series. Thanks to the multi-system capability and the design as a universal locomotive, the BB 22200 can be used on almost all standard-gauge electrified lines in France in front of freight and passenger trains.
