Electric locomotive ÖBB BR1189.06 crocodile green, Ep.IV
When the then Austrian Federal Railroad BBÖ needed express locomotives for the ramps of the Arlbergbahn at the beginning of the 1920s, they went back to the model of the tried and tested SBB crocodiles and thus also adopted the typical appearance with the two long, flat front ends. The first examples were put into service in 1923, followed by a total of 16 other machines from this series by 1927. After Austria was annexed to the German Reich in 1938, the Deutsche Reichsbahn designated the crocodiles as E89 (1100) and E89.1 (1100.1). After the 2nd World War, the remaining machines came as ÖBB 1089 and ÖBB1189 to the re-established Austrian Federal Railroad (ÖBB). The locomotives were not taken out of service until 1979. After the end of the war, some crocodiles were also used in Switzerland.
