This fire engine house is the reconstruction of the small house of St. Hubert-Voesch, which was built in 1779 and collapsed in 1959. In this kind of fire engine houses all the firefighting equipment was stored, like buckets, fire engines, pike pole and fire hoses. Before the 18th century the fire extinguishing equipment was stored with the respective owners. The name of the owner was written on each piece of equipment, so it was possible to recognize which piece belonged to whom. Then fire engine houses were built in more places and in the 19th century the voluntary fire department emerged.
In the towns the fire departments were organized by crafts and guilds, but on the countryside this was all voluntary work. Due to the technological developments the equipment got more and more advanced. Especially the fire engine, which was developed in the 16th century, replaced the wooden hand engine and the leathern or wooden buckets. Since the 17th century there are leathern fire hoses and the first hemp hoses were developed in the middle of the 18th century. But these could only be really used 100 years later, when the hose was rubber-lined. Did you know that… … in the past no fire truck came to help in the case of fire? Everyone owned a bucket and had to help in the neighborhood, if there was a fire somewhere. Later the voluntary fire departments emerged, which could extinguish the fire with a fire engine. The fire engine was either pulled by people or horses to the burning house or farm. |

Precise scale replication of the building in the Lower Rhine Open-Air Museum in Grefrath in the Viersen district. The Modellbahn Union in cooperation with the Grefrath open-air museum authentically replicates the museum buildings as models in 1:87 and 1: 160.
This house, which belongs to the Waldniel courtyard in the open-air museum, comes from Waldniel in today's Schwalmtal municipality. The building was originally a half-timbered house, in which large parts of the facade were replaced by field fires in 1785. The small barn belonging to the courtyard from 1802 and the large one, which was built in 1791, come from other Lower Rhine farms. The carriage house is a reconstruction from around 1800. Overall, the courtyard is typical of the 19th century. The advancing industrialization brought changes on the farms. Many small farmers and day laborers had to look for work in the factories because what they earned on the farms was no longer sufficient for a living. The freedom of trade led to great competition and thus high price pressure, which many could not withstand. In addition, women had to replace the labor that had been lost as a result of the migration of men to urban factories. Wealthy owners modernized and enlarged their yards. But living conditions also changed: with increasing health awareness and the knowledge of modern medicine, the demands on hygiene and thus on the sanitary facilities increased. Flowing water, toilets and bathrooms were used more and more. Did you know that ... ... the saying "be rich in stones" comes from house building? People who did not have much money in the past lived in simple houses with walls made of wood, clay and straw. In autumn and winter, however, they were not really tight against cold, rain and snow. They had to be repaired again and again because the rain washed the clay off the walls. Those who had more money could build a stone house - it was better to heat and protect against bad weather because it was tight. And everyone saw that you were "very rich". |

This farm consists of a house with two floors and a big barn. Both were built in the 17th century and are from the so-called farm “Spenneshof” in Süchtel-Hagen. The ground area of the house is around 58m² and thus not very big. However, the people lived here together with the animals under one roof. Next to the house is a granary, which was used to store seeds. In the past this building was part of a farm called “Fückeshof” in Schmalbroich-Wall. Contrary to the other buildings the granary stems from the early 18th century. The owners did not only use it for storage, but temporally also as bakehouse and a living area for the elderly.
Usually, the barn was the biggest and most important agricultural building of the farms. It had several functions, but the storage of grains and hay was the most important one. It was also used as a stable, a storage for farming vehicles and wagons, or as a working place, for example for the threshing of grains. Even though, originally not part of this farm, the barn (built in 1724) which is situated in front of the “Spenneshof” fits well into its overall picture. Originally, the barn was part of a farm in the town St. Tönis and was used as a stable and storage. Did you know that… … these buildings are more than 350 years old? The house was used as living area for the whole family and the animals. On the ground floor the people cooked and worked, and next to this the stable was situated. The bedrooms were upstairs. In the house there was no nursery, where children could play on their own. There was always someone around: During the daytime at work, but also in the evening when it got dark. Hay and grains were stored in the two barns, where was much more space than in the house. Additionally, in case of fire in the house, at least the harvest was safe. |

This byre-dwelling is from Waldniel, which belongs to the community Schwalmtal. Originally, this house was a pure timber-frame house, but in the year 1785 big parts of the front of the building were replaced by historic bricks. Both the small barn from 1802, and the big barn, which was built in the year 1791, stem from different farms from the Lower-Rhine region. The carriage house is a reconstruction of a building from around 1800.
The farm is very typical for the 19th century. The advancing industrialization also brought changes to the farms. Many peasants and day laborers had to get additional jobs in factories, because the money they earned on the farms was not enough to live on anymore. The economic freedom led to an enormous competition and thereby a big price pressure arose which many people could not bear up against. Furthermore, the women had to replace the workforce, which was lost because men went to the factories in the cities. Wealthy owners modernized and expanded their farms. But the housing conditions changed too: Health awareness increased and the knowledge of modern medicine expanded, which led to a higher demand of hygiene and sanitation. Running water, lavatories and bathrooms were used more and more. Did you know that… … the German expression for “filthy rich” would literally translated mean “stone rich”? This expression comes from building a house. In the past, people who did not have much money lived in houses with walls of wood, clay and hay. But in fall and winter these walls could not protect them very well from the cold, rain and snow. They had to be repaired very often because the rain had washed off the clay. The people who had more money could build houses of stone – the warmth of the oven stayed better inside and when the weather was bad the people where better protected because of the increased solidity of the wall. And everyone could see that one was “stone rich”. |

Since 1800 the castle Dorenburg was leased by farmers, who farmed there until the late 1960s. In the early 19th century a big barn was built in order to store the harvest. After many changes of ownership in the last 300 years, the castle became the property of the city of Grefrath in 1966 and later of the district Viersen.
Today, a toy museum is set up inside the barn. On three floors one can view toys from three centuries in their respective cultural-historical context. Did you know that… …. the barn in front of you is not a storage for grains and hay anymore? Instead you can find a lot of toys there on three floors! When you look at the toys you can learn a lot about their history: Why we play, and what is so special about it. At the entrance you got a red foil. Now you can use it: Below the texts for the adults there are hidden texts for the children – these only you can read – not the adults! |

This brick building originally was the stable of the castle Dorenburg. Today, the building shelters a village smithy, as it was normal around 1900. The profession of a blacksmith is one of the oldest crafts existing at all. Additionally, it was one of the most important professions in town as well as on the country side.
In the village smithies tools were fabricated but also repaired. The blacksmith produced iron pieces for agricultural machines and vehicles. He did not only produce horseshoes but was also the person to shoe the horse himself. Furthermore, there were blacksmiths who were specialized on certain materials or on the production of certain items: There were for example the copper-smith or silver smith and the cutler or armorer. Due to the industrialization in the 19th century the smithies often developed to industrial metal ware businesses, even in the villages. Did you know that… … there is a German saying which literally means “to make nails with nailheads”, which comes from smithery? In the past, nails were not made by machines but by the blacksmith on the anvil. For working properly the nail needed a nailhead on which one could hammer, without it the nail would disappear in the wall. So the saying means: One has to do his job well, otherwise it will not end well. |

- Small Green Coach (Powered) - Small Green Coach (Unpowered) - N.B.Set does not include track, controller or sound power pack. With this Passenger train (the locomotive is modeled on a Bavarian D6 mountain, the carriages are based on Austrian carriages), Kato launched the successful series "Pocket Line" many years ago. The small 2-axle locomotive is relatively petite, since the drive is accommodated in the chassis of the first passenger car. The pulling power is good enough to be able to pull a further 3 wagons. The drive is made by a high-quality 5-pole Kato engine. With this model is the entry into the good, old steam locomotive. Easy to realize. For this train, there are currently still many Swiss, Austrian, Dutch, French and German museum railways and clubs. |
