Precise scale replication of the building in the Lower Rhine Open-Air Museum in Grefrath in the Viersen district. The Modellbahn Union in cooperation with the Grefrath open-air museum authentically replicates the museum buildings as models in 1:87 and 1: 160.
The training apiary was established in 1963 by the "Beekeeping Association Oedt and Environment". Initially, the wooden house was in the bird sanctuary in Grefrath-Oedt. In order to make the knowledge about beekeeping and bees accessible to a larger audience, the apiary and bee colony came to the museum in 2009. Since then, the members of the beekeeping association have given visitors everything they need to know about bees. The use of honey can be traced back to the Stone Age. Beekeeping also has a long history, and it flourished in Europe during the Middle Ages. Beehives were kept especially in the monasteries, since there, in addition to honey as a food and medicinal product, wax was also used for the candles. In the Middle Ages, a distinction was made between the profession of beekeepers and forest beekeepers: the former kept the bee colonies in specially made straw baskets. The forest beekeeper, the so-called Zeidler, however, collected honey from beehives in the forest. Did you know that ... ... people ate honey 9000 years ago? First they collected honey from the wild bees, later many people kept their own beehives. A beehive is something like a bee colony's house, and it was either made of straw or wood. By the way, honey is not only delicious, but also served as medicine. The wax can also be used to make candles. |
