The double-decker single carriages were expected to allow for more flexible adjustments to fluctuating passenger volumes and to reduce costs due to damage. After extensive testing of the two prototypes, an initial series of approximately 138 vehicles was delivered starting in 1974.

To meet its demand for heavy shunting locomotives, the DR (East German Railways) ordered 37 units from LEW Henningsdorf in the late 1970s. LEW had already developed such locomotives for export. Produced in three batches between 1981 and 1983, these locomotives featured the proven 1,000 hp engine but a gearbox with a modified ratio, similar to the early V 100 locomotives. Consequently, their top speed was limited to 65 km/h. A ballast weight replaced the conventional boiler. Like all DR shunting locomotives, these locomotives were painted orange and yellow. For the safety of shunting personnel during operation, railings were fitted to the front of the locomotives.

In the 1950s, the German Federal Railway (Deutsche Bundesbahn) developed a diesel locomotive program to modernize its rolling stock. The primary goal was to replace steam traction on the still relatively extensive branch line network. For mixed branch line service, the single-engine V 100 series with 1100 hp engines was developed. Parallel to these V 100.10 locomotives, a total of 380 locomotives with 1350 hp engines were delivered between 1962 and 1965 as the V 100.20. With the introduction of computerized numbering, the class designation of the more powerful locomotives was changed to 212. The 212 series has undergone several color variations over time; from 1987 onward, Orient Red became the standard color.

Meet Percy.
Percy is a green four-wheeled steam locomotive (0-4-0 tank) with the number 6 on his coal bunker. Percy first appeared in 1950 in the fifth book of Reverend Wilbert Awdry's railway series, titled "Troublesome Engines," and received his own book, No. 11, "Percy the Small Engine." He frequently works with Troublesome Trucks.
