100 years of FD trains
The "crease," or more prosaically, the E 10.3: There is hardly a German locomotive type that shaped the heyday of the German Federal Railway (Deutsche Bundesbahn) from the 1960s onward as much as the elegant and streamlined machines of the E 10.3 series. Their impressive success story began in the 1950s, when the fledgling Federal Railway pushed ahead with electrification and ordered a large number of the powerful and fast E 10 electric locomotives. The first production series (E 10.0 and E 10.1) still had a rather mundane, boxy locomotive body; in 1962, the first examples with an "aerodynamic" front appeared. The distinctive design with the "crease" in the middle soon earned the variant designated E 10.3 the nickname "crease." For decades, the E 10 locomotives were the workhorses of DB's premium passenger services, and the "creased" design was certainly one of the stars of the German railways. From 1990 onwards, the E 10s moved into regional transport, where they also reliably performed their duties. The last of these "creased" locomotives were finally retired from regular service with DB in 2013, having accumulated many millions of kilometers.
