The Re 4/4 II locomotives were designed as universal locomotives for the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) and are used for both passenger and freight trains. With 277 locomotives, it is the largest locomotive series in Switzerland. The Re 4/4 II was built from 1964 to 1985 and remains in service today. With the commissioning of the Ae 6/6 on the Gotthard line, a fast and powerful locomotive for express trains became available. However, the two three-axle bogies placed considerable stress on the tracks. This particularly limited the Ae 6/6's speed on curves. The Re 4/4 II provided a locomotive capable of high speeds even on curves. The locomotive delivered 4700 kW, reached a top speed of 140 km/h, and was therefore classified as a Class R locomotive. Its design was based on that of the Re 6/6. Both locomotives also occasionally operated in double traction as the Re 10/10.
Lacking alternatives, some locomotives were specially rebuilt for the Swiss Express. They received a longer buffer beam, new couplings, and a paint scheme in the Swiss Express colors of orange-gray-orange. They also bear the SBB logo instead of the Swiss cross. Other Re 4/4 II locomotives were later further modernized, receiving, for example, single-arm pantographs, rectangular halogen headlights, and cab air conditioning. Besides the SBB, these locomotives are also in service with the BLS and other Swiss railway companies.
