N-Scale 08/2025: 21 Years of DM-Toys - Bernard Koenen mine

we already introduced you to the expansion through the acquisition of the MKB product range yesterday.

But we have another big hit in store for our 21st anniversary:

The "Bernard Koenen Mine" project. A huge project that, with the help of several models, will enable the construction of one of the most important sites in the Mansfeld region. Since we have already created several models in the field of mining, we are particularly pleased to also present mining in the former GDR with this series.

The Bernard Koenen mine was a copper ore mine in the Mansfeld region of the GDR, active from 1958 to 1990. It produced around 14 million tons of ore, containing 315,000 tons of copper and 1,600 tons of silver. Named after the SED politician Bernard Koenen, it was considered a prestige project and employed up to 4,700 people. Technically challenging, due to water ingress and salt deposits, among other things. In 1987, a mine fire occurred that claimed three lives – the worst disaster in the region. After the mine was closed, the shafts were flooded and sealed. Today, the mine is a monument to East German mining history.

A double-decker train with a suspended bench, inspired by the double-decker train from the Bernard Koenen mine in Niederröblingen. This double-decker train is the only remaining train in the Mansfeld copper mining area and was built in 1956.

With a diameter of 6 meters, the shaft reached a final depth of 693 meters.

The mine was first named after Bernard Koenen, the communist politician persecuted in the 1930s, in 1964. It was closed after reunification in 1990. Today, the site is used by several companies. Unfortunately, the mine gate is currently in poor condition and no longer has a guide rail.

Our model has a reduced and simplified hanging bench and can be motorized with the MU_N-i00154 set, although the model of the engine house (MU_N-i00084) is also required.
