Planned as a replacement for the Prussian G 10 in freight transport, the Class 50 developed into a universal locomotive by the end of the steam locomotive era. A total of 3,164 units were produced in 21 different locomotive factories from 1939 to 1943. After 1945, over 2,000 locomotives remained with the Deutsche Bundesbahn, some of which underwent major rebuilds, resulting in a multitude of variants. The locomotives reached a top speed of 80 km/h, produced approximately 1,200 kW, and had an axle load of 15 t.

In 1941 and 1942, a total of four type D 311 double locomotives were put into service by the German Wehrmacht. They were built to carry heavy railway guns. Two locomotives, road numbers V 188 001 a/b and V 188 002 a/b, continued to be used by the Deutsche Bundesbahn after the war. A third locomotive served as a spare parts donor. They proved themselves in heavy freight train and pusher service, mainly on the Spessart ramp. Road number V 188 001 had to be shut down in 1968 after generator damage. V 188 002, later 288 002, was in operation in the Franconian area until 1972. In 1973 both machines were scrapped.

In 1971, the Deutsche Bundesbahn set up the intercity system as a city express system with 1st class vehicles in two Hourly intervals. On average, six units were used daily. After a renovation, it was used in special tourist transport ("Alpen-See-Express") from 1980. Starting from Hamburg and Dortmund, the tourist trains ran to popular holiday regions in southern Germany and Austria.

With the introduction of the DB series scheme on January 1, 1968, the power cars of the VT 11.5 were renumbered to the class 601, the intermediate cars to the class 901. In 1971, the Deutsche Bundesbahn set up the intercity system as a city express system with 1st class vehicles in two Hourly intervals. On average, six units were used daily. After a renovation, it was used in special tourist transport ("Alpen-See-Express") from 1980. In the early 1930s, in order to make traveling and excursion services more attractive for the German population, the then Deutsche Reichsbahn-Gesellschaft (DRG) decided to build a total of five observation railcars. At that time, it was important for the DRG to be able to stand up to the increasing competition in bus services for excursions. When building the railcars, the goal was to give all passengers as free and unhindered a view of the landscape as possible. In addition to three diesel-hydraulic vehicles, two were also ordered for electric operation. H. Fuchs Waggonfabrik in Heidelberg was responsible for the mechanical part, while AEG, Berlin, supplied the electrical part. Both railcars ET 91 01 and 02, which were given the sonorous name "Glass Train" by the population, quickly established themselves with the passengers. Popular excursions were the Karwendel tour via Mittenwald to Innsbruck or the Alpine tour via Salzburg, Bischofshofen and Kufstein to Munich.

To implement the “Bahn 2000” concept, the SBB purchased 24 locomotives from this series. A further series of 75 locomotives were built to cope with the piggyback corridor through Switzerland that was to be guaranteed from January 1, 1994. These locomotives were later assigned to passenger transport with divisionalization. To this day they are indispensable for the traction of the dense Swiss traffic.
