50 years ago: Farewell to the 01 at the Federal Railway
They were a legend and the queens of German rails: the mighty Pacific express train locomotives of the 01 series, which shaped high-quality express train traffic in Germany from 1928 onwards. 50 years ago, these rail stars finally had to retire from the DB. Before that, however, they had made major appearances - in the steam locomotive stronghold of Hof. There, they pulled express, fast and passenger trains, sometimes in double traction, to Regensburg, via Kulmbach to Lichtenfels and, as a special highlight, over the famous Schiefe Ebene, a 25 per mille ramp near Neuenmarkt-Wirsberg. In 1972, Hof still used 14 proud 01s, including the always well-maintained 01 111. Steam locomotive enthusiasts from all over the world made a pilgrimage to Franconia at the time to experience the last big 01 gala up close. In autumn 1974, the 01 chapter at the Federal Railway finally came to an end. 01 111, which had kept its old boiler and front apron, was spared the scrapyard. Today it stands at the foot of the Schiefen Ebene in the German Steam Locomotive Museum Neuenmarkt-Wirsberg and is a reminder of a glorious chapter in German locomotive history.
Prototype: Express train steam locomotive 001 111-4 of the German Federal Railways (DB). Operating condition around 1972. Version with old-style boiler, closed front apron and smoke deflectors of the "Witte" type.

The Czech State Railways purchased the locomotives 1216 902 and 903 from Rail Transport Service GmbH (RTS) in September 2019. After a thorough overhaul and repainting in the ÖBB TS workshops in Linz, they are now mostly used in EuroCity traffic between Vienna and Poland.
