In den 50er Jahren suchte die DB nach neuen Geschäftsfeldern. Aufgrund der veränderten politischen Rahmenbedingungen war das Land zu einem Nord-Süd Gebilde gewachsen, wo auch die Verkehre neu geordnet werden mussten. Hinzu kam noch geänderte Ein- und Verkaufsgewohnheiten, auf das die Bahn reagieren wollte. So erfand man den Expressgutverkehr. Dummerweise gab es hierfür noch keine geeigneten Fahrzeuge. Da stand die DB zweifach im Dilemma: Es gab kein Geld für neue Fahrzeuge, andererseits hatte die DB viele Fahrzeuge aus dem Krieg, wofür es keine rechte Verwendung mehr gab. Es waren die Behelfs-Personenwagen MCi-43. So kam man auf die Idee, zwei dieser Fahrzeuge zusammen zu bauen. Das Ganze im Rahmen eines Umbauprogramms. Nach einigen Probewagen fiel der Startschuss für den Serienumbau.
